In exami-nation of the clavicles fractures must not be mistaken for disease of thebones, such as rhachitis. The examination of the spinal column is of thegreatest importance. (See Spinal Joints.) A study of the diseases ofthe spinal column due to caries from tuberculosis is not within the prov-ince of this work; no physical examination, however, is complete withoutan investigation of the movability of the spine and the presence or absenceof curvature. I refer to the curvature due to weakness of groups ofspinal muscles. Functional disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract andthe uterus are undoubtedly intensified by the presence of curvature, which Fig. 41.

Pulmonary osteo-arthropathy. Female, aged eleven years. Tuberculous vertebral caries andpulmonary tuberculcsis. Enlarged clubbed fingers and thickened ulna and radius. Privatepatient, 1885. (Original.) leads to deformity of the body, and hence to the assuming of abnormalpositions when sitting or walking. The recognition of lateral or anteriorcurvature leads to the adoption of lines of treatment which otherwisewould not be followed, but without which weak muscles, improper aerationof the blood, and sluggish circulation would persist. Pain in the distri-bution of nerves or at their termination is often due to spinal cariespressing on them as they pass through the foramina. The most notableis the pain about the umbilicus due to Potts disease in children. The bones and cartilages connected with the thorax will be consideredunder Diseases of the Lungs. Nodules or Nodes.
