preted in the light of other findings the six-hour residue is of value as a diagnostic sign. Thepresence of a well-marked incisura, for instance,accompanying a good sized six-hour residue is con-sidered good evidence of the presence of ulcer. Cakcinoma of the stomach (Figs. 38, 42) givesa very characteristic picture in advanced cases. Evenin early ones it is usually possible to make a diagnosisof the presence of an organic lesion with probablybeginning malignancy. The diagnosis is based uponthe occurrence of defects in the barium shadow of thestomach appearing constantly on screen and plates.If the growth is a nodular one the defects in the shadowmay be small circular areas—the so-called fijiger-print defects (Fig. 38). The area involved mayhave a ragged, worm-eaten appearance due to theirregular nature of the growth or it may progress inthe shape of a cone. The latter appearance is fre-quently seen in the antrum pylori, the constrictedpylorus forming the apex of the cone. Carcinoma
