William M. Andrews House, 22 Hussey Street, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA

description

Summary

Significance: The house at Twenty-Two Hussey Street was the first residence on the island of Nantucket to be designed and constructed by William M. Andrews, and early carpenter and house wright. Finished in 1836, the building is noteworthy because it is a rare example of early speculative housing on the island. The structure is a typical nineteenth century Nantucket house which shows the influence of the emerging Greek Revival style. A pediment is visually supported by engaged pilasters at the corners of the north facade. Greek Revival detailing is evident in the facade, as well as in the details and moldings of the interior. The most unique feature of the house is a large triangular window which is mounted in the pediment. The window has an inscribed circular element and the overall effect can be described as a great spider's web.
