Walz Block ghost - National Parks Gallery

description

Summary

Today a garage stands at 416-418 Pine Street in Calumet. If you look closely, sandstone walls reveal a hint of the building's past. In 1902, Finnish immigrant, businesswoman, developer, activist, and publisher Maggie Walz commissioned a handsome sandstone building with oriel windows and a corner turret. In a more personal touch, the large cornice had a pediment which included the owner's signature in the pressed metal.

Walz's offices, a drug store, candy store, an IGA, other businesses, and apartments occupied this block before most of it was demolished circa 1959. While the side and rear walls of the ground floor remain, the rest of the Walz block is #MissingintheCopperCountry.

Nothing Found.
