Nikolai Ushin - 1001 Nights, vol 1, reversal title
Nikolai Ushin (1898–1942) was Soviet theater artist and book schedule. Brother graphic artist Alexei Ushin. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under P. A. Shillingovsky (1923-1928). In the 1920s - 1930s he created a design for theatrical productions. He developed for himself a little pretentious (so-called «Ushinsky») style of conveying images of the revolution, creatively reworking the motifs of medieval Russian painting and Palekh lacquer miniature. Created bookplates and lithographs. Working at the Academia publishing house, he executed the decoration of the eight fairy tale book «Tales of 1001 Nights» and received the Gold Medal of the Paris exhibition of 1937 for this work. Another well-known artist’s work for the Academia publishing house was the design of the book «Lemuel Gulliver's Travels» (binding, dust jacket and bookend), published in 1928.
