U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the Puerto Rico National Guard's 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, wave to pedestrians on their way to the St. Thomas, Virgin Islands Cyril E. King Airport for departure on Sept. 26, 2017. Hurricane Maria formed in the Atlantic Ocean and affected islands in the Caribbean Sea, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. U.S. military assets supported FEMA as well as state and local authorities in rescue and relief efforts.
