Uite, amice, că este aprópe de copcă, Ghimpele, 11 ian 1876

description

Summary

Two-panel political cartoon in the Romanian liberal and nationalist magazine Ghimpele, directed against the conservative L. Catargiu cabinet.Left side: Uite, amice, că este aprópe de copcă. Buf, şi noĭ îlŭ vomŭ moşteni. ("Look there, buddy, he is so close to the ice-hole. Splat!, and we stand to inherit his place.") Moderate conservative leader Dimitrie Ghica, in the pointed hat, and a bull-headed figure, symbolizing Vasile Boierescu (known to Ghimpele as Boŭ-erescu, approx. "Oxman"), jinxing Catargiu. Flying above, and supporting the cause, is Cezar Bolliac, shown as part-owl. He holds in his claws a brass instrument, possibly alluding to the title of his newspaper, Trompeta Carpaţilor ("The Trumpet of the Carpathians").Right side: Prin modificarea art. 8, din codicile civile, chemaţiĭ ne spune, că orĭ cum ne putem manifesta, devenim Românĭ. Prin urmare curtându-te suntem Românĭ !!!... ("With the modification of Civil Code Article 8, the elected representatives tell us that, no matter how we manifest ourselves, me become Romanians. Therefore, when we're courting you, we are doing it as Romanians!!!...") A xenophobic comment about the proposal to extend nationality rights, which the liberals were fighting. The three figures stand for three ethnicities traditionally excluded under 19th-century Romanian law, depicted here as racial stereotypes: the payot-, kippah- and kaftan-wearing Jew, with his hooked nose; the Greek or Albanian, wearing a fustanella and a fez; and, in busby and laced uniform, the mustachioed Hungarian. They approach a horrified Romanian maid, identified by her folk costume (including a coin necklace).

Mrs. Helen L.C. Lawrence who was born in Portugal and came to the United States and San Leandro, California when she was a young girl. She has always been active in civic affairs and was elected a member of the five-member council of San Leandro. The five members of the council elect a mayor from their group and Mrs. Lawrence was honored with this position. "I say honored though it has been mostly hard work. I was proud that I, a Portuguese by birth, should be deemed worthy of this office. The Portuguese people are well aware of the very great privileges they enjoy as citizens of this country and we all strive to be just as aware of the duties that citizenship brings."
