description

Summary

PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 06, 2008) Two F/A-18C Hornets assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 195 launch from the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) for the last time. Carrier Air Wing 5 aircraft flew off Kitty Hawk to join the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) in San Diego. George Washington will replace Kitty Hawk as the Navy's only carrier operating from Japan in September. Kitty Hawk is headed back to the U.S. mainland for decommissioning in early 2009. Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
