ular material was scooped out with the fingers. Nephrectomy was quickly performed, and recovery wasprompt and uneventful. Patient is entirely well. The speci-men was submitted to Dr. J. E. Paullin, of the CarnegieLaboratory of Pathology of the Atlanta College of Physiciansand Surgeons, who pronounced it to be a dermoid cyst. Pathological Report. The specimen consists of a kidney measuring 14J x 8 x 4cm. The surface of the kidney is everywhere quite smooth.The capsule strips away easily, leaving a smooth, regularsurface. On the upper pole of the kidney there is a massmeasuring 7£ x 8 x 5 cm. This mass is covered externally bya thin layer of fibrous tissue resembling very much the capsuleof the kidney. The mass itself is larger than that portion ofthe kidney substance which remains. Definite fluctuation ispresent. On section a large quantity of dark reddish, thick,mealy material exudes which is more or less matted togetherby hair. The lining of this cyst is quite irregular, coarse, and

Dermoid Cyst of Kidney WILLIAM S. GOLDSMITH 97 granular, and growing from the inner surface one finds numer-ous long, whitish hairs. In the cyst contents escaping a toothis found. This measures 3x4 mm. The cyst wall measures from 1 to 3 mm. in thickness, andhas a dark, whitish appearance, being quite tough. Nodefinite mucous membrane can be seen lining this wall on itsinner side. In one place it would seem that this cyst com-municates with the pelvis of the kidney by a very small open-ing, which measures 2 mm. in diameter. This, however,cannot be definitely determined, because at this particularplace the kidney has been sectioned. The cut surface of the kidney shows the cortex to measureabout 4 mm. in thickness. The Malpighian bodies stand outquite distinctly. The pyramids appear apparently normal.The pelvis of the kidney shows a slight thickening, and inplaces there is a definite fibrinuos exudate covering themucosa.
