The praises of photography direct from the microscope have beenalready sung by men whose success in the employment of this meansgives the best possible support to their claims of its value,1 and thenumber of those who are using it is daily growing; yet there remain alarge number of microscopists who fail to perceive its merits, or whoregard the matter as lying outside of their field of work. They lookrather scornfully at the best photographs of microbes or diatoms overwhich photographic experts grow enthusiastic, and incline to regard asa failure any photograph which falls short of giving the conventionalpicture of the diagrammatic drawings of the text-books. Even whenunprejudiced examination has shown the exquisite fidelity and thediagrammatic clearness which may be obtained by photography, theystill regard it as the province of the photographic enthusiast rather thanof the practical micro
