Threedistinct beats, at slow intervals, rangthrough the apparently deserted town, andechoed loudly from the neighboring moun-tain. It was the signal! A few minuteselapsed, and, like a distant echo from thenorth, the three mournful notes again dis-tinctly sounded. Was it an echo; Impos-sible! Now from the south, far distant, but un-mistakable, the same three regular beatscame booming through the still night air.Again and again from every quarter, spread-ing far and wide, the signal was respondedto, and the whole country echoed thosethree solemn notes so full of warning. Oncemore the great nogara of Tarrangollesounded the original alarm within a fewhundred paces of our quarters. The wholecountry was up. There was no doubtabout the matter.
