y wholly for a while. Accordingly, whilethe Provincial Congress was in session at Concord,they made their abode with the Rev. Jonas Clark atLexington. The General Court, which had been summoned byGovernor Gage to meet at Salem on the 5th ofOctober, 1774, was dissolved by him before the dayarrived. Its members, pursuant to the course agreedupon, resolved themselves into a Provincial Congress.This body, on the 26th of October, adopted a plan fororganizing and maintaining the militia. It also estab-lished, as executive authorities, a Committee of Safetyand a Committee of Supplies. Committees of corre-spondence had for months existed in many places underthe authority of the towns alone, and now they wereprovided with a Provincial head. Instructions weregiven that militia and minute-men should be put inthe best posture of defence, and communication wasopened with the other New England States in regardto organizing for their common security. This wasthe situation on the i8th of April, 1775.

II LEXINGTONS MIDNIGHT ALARM \^Paul Reveres own Story of His Ride?-\ Dear Sir^—Having a little leisure, I wish to fulfilmy promise of giving you some facts and anecdotesprior to the battle of Lexington, which I do not re-member to have seen in any * History of the Amer-ican Revolution. In the year 1773 I was employed by the Selectmenof the town of Boston to carry the account of theDestruction of the Tea to New York; and afterwards,1774, to carry their despatches to New York andPhiladelphia for calling a Congress ; and afterwardsto Congress several times.
