rtical cuttingaction may be given to the slide-rest andhead-stock, carrying the lathe mandrel,by two connecting-rods, b b, actuated bycrank discs beneath the bed,and balanced,if necessary. The connecting-rods areadjustable for length by means of a crossshaft, c, actuating a screw-wheel andscrew in each; d is the tangent-screwmotion, as usual, and E is a slide to re-gulate the eccentricity of the tool duringturning and planing hollows, which maybe automatically fed, when requisite, byan eccentric, not shown in the figure. Ascrew, f, gives the cross motion, andanother at the back of the slide, e, whichit actuates, adjusts the mandrel in a ver-tical plane. By the diagonal principlewe described, the octagonal recesses, orseats, for plummer-block brasses, andother angular work, may be executed with precision. Fig. 6 represents a convenient form of bed. The bed-chuckapplies to the side, as used for holding plummer-blocks whilst Practical Draughtsman. Example Plate A. yymr\i\& EflcnniDa.
