s made inabout two weeks. Tacoma and Seattle Line (from Tacoma to Seattle,40 miles).—Tourists visiting Seattle from Tacoma shouldmake the trip in one direction by rail and in the other byboat. The rail route runs through a series of highly fer-tile valleys, which are thickly settled with market gar-deners, hop-raisers and fruit raisers and dairymen andwhich support a number of pretty and thriving towns.The trains run eastward on the main line for ten miles toMeeker Junction, passing through the hop metropolis ofPuyallup, described elsewhere in this volume. FromMeeker they turn north along the valleys of the Stuck, theWhite, the Black and the Dwamish rivers, and skirting thewestern shore of Elliot bay run into the heart of the cityof Seattle. Frequent trains are run to accommodate thelarge travel between Seattle and Tacoma. Sumner is a hop-growing village with about 500 inhabi-tants. Auburn, formerly called Slaugh-ter, is a smart town of i,ooo inhabitants in^a rich valleymainly devoted to hop culture and the small fruits andvegetables. Kent has 1,500 people and is the chief townon the line. With ten acres of land in this highly produc-tive alluvial valley a farmer is looked upon as well-off.Kent is a well-built town in themidst of orchards^ gardensand hop fields. On Puget Sound.—All tourists visiting the Pacificcoast should make a voyage on Puget sound, at least tothe extent of taking the trip from Tacoma to Victoria andreturn. This is one of the most delightful and impressiveexcursions by water in the world. Nowhere else, save inAlaska and in Japan, can gigantic snow peaks be seen ris-ing almost from the sea level to heights far above theclouds.
