Tahsin pasha was thrown back uponMonastir. The battles of the next ten days werehardly more than skirmishes, for the Turkish standwas never formidable. At Yanitza, the only realbattle of the Greek campaign was fought. TheTurks fled. The way to Salonika was open. The battle of Yanitza (Yenidje-Vardar) wasfought on November 3d. On October 30th, a Greektorpedo-boat had succeeded, in spite of the strongharbour fortifications, equipped with electric search-lights, and the mined channel, in coming right upto the jetty at Salonika during the night, and launch-ing three torpedoes at an old Turkish cruiser whichlay at anchor there. The cruiser sank. On hisway out to open sea, the commander of the torpedo-boat did not hesitate to fire upon the forts! This daring feat, and the approach of the Greekarmy, threw the city into a turmoil of excitement.The people had been fed for two weeks on falsenews, and telegrams had been printed from day today, relating wonderful victories over the Servians, 296
