The sides of niche are of stucco, and ornamented withdolphins. In the centre is a marhle statue of Marsyas, 2 ft.7 ins. high, holding a sldn under his left arm, from which a jetof water flows down five steps in front, 3 ft. 8 ins. wide, and isconducted, by a marble channel 11 ins. wide, into the circularbasin. The figure of Marsyas may have reference to thePhrygian character of many of the paintmgs in this house; orit may have been very appropriately introduced as a suitableornament to a fountam, from the behef that the Phrygianriver had its source from the cave of this being. On each sideis a bicipital hernial statue, 4 ft. high including base, the headsof which exhibit a bearded Bacchus and Ariadne, on the left;and a male and female Faun on the right, both distmguished byshort horns. Near these was found a head of Typhon, formedof stucco and covered with porcelain. In front of garden are two other hermal statues of the sameheight, and each representmg the Indian Bacchus and Ariadne.
