e feet below thesurface, one of them struck his pickaxe into somethingwhich he took to be a drain-pipe, but it provedto be a sepulchral urn of the genuine Celtic type,containing a quantity of burnt human bones, apparentlythose of a young person, and a finely polished flint arrow-head of the leaf pattern, likewise some fragments of abarbed arrow head that had been partially calcined. Thewhole had been deposited upon the bare soil, and formedinto a heap, with the urn inverted over it, and its dimen-sions had been about 8 inches in height, 7^ in breadth,gradually tapering down to 4 inches at the bottom. Uponan examination of the natural surface of the ground wherethe interm.ent had taken place, there was nothing unusualto be seen indicative of its site ; around the urn, however,at the bottom of the trench, the soil had been deeplytinged with carbonaceous matter, bits of charcoal andblackened stones. CINERARY URN WITH FLINT ARROW HEAD, L A N G L E Y. 23 dolmens or cromlechs, accompanied occasionally by stonecircles, near to or over the remains of departed friends,warriors, &c,, and perhaps one of the above had been used inthis instance, but it has shared the fate of many others whichhave been either removed or destroyed in this country.Near the head of the above reservoir at Langley, may benoticed a large conical mound which has the appearanceof a tumulus ; and a little further on the road towardsLeathers Smithy, close to a farm house on the left, thereis another tumulus which has evidently been investigated. From the base of Teggsnose the Yoredale Rocks keepto the line of road towards Macclesfield, with the gritsclose by to the right, when at length both are cut off bythe Red Rock fault near the railway bridge in Sutton.At this juncture some remarkable results occur.
