work thehydraulic cranes, etc. The mode of transmitting semi-rotating motion to the con-verter was another important problem which I had to solve. Iwas of opinion that ordinary shafting and straps were inappli-cable to this fiery monster. Five or ten tons of fluid metal hadto be lifted in one direction, this load diminishing until the fluidrunning to the opposite end of the converter tended to reversethe driving gear. If anything went wrong, or slipped, the con-verter might swing itself round and discharge the incandescentmetal on to the floor or among the workpeople. These considera-tions led me to adopt the hydraulic apparatus now universallyemployed for governing the motions of the converter: for, withthis simple and reliable means, a lad at a safe distance can startor stop it instantly, can alter its speed and motion and controlthe pouring of a lo-ton charge with ease and certainty.
