The particular set investigated was the Berdon system, manufactured by the Esterline Company of Indianapolis.Thi3system is of the two unit type, arranged for installation in thetransraission,or near the flywheel. The generator is arranged torun by connection to the engine either by silent chain, orthrough a connection with the transmission shaft. The generator is constructed by using a permanent magnetfield of three horse-shoe magnets with a magnetic conductor orshunt between the poles just over the armature. Two coils arewound around this magnetic shunt, one composed of many turns ofcomparatively small wire, which connects across the load terminalsand acts as a shunt coil, whose action is in opposition to theflux through the magnetic shunt;the other coij. has only a fewturns of heavy wire wound in the opposite direction to the shuntcoil and is connected in series with the load and its action isto increase the flux through the magnetic shunt. Therefore atheavy loads the c
