In spite of my passion for the chase, friendly reader, Ideclare that I have no desire again to try the experimentof a sledge-journey in the snow. If ever I experience afancy to renew my acquaintance with the elks, I shalltake a cab to the Zoological Gardens, where I can seatmyself at my ease, near the ravage of these animals,and observe their habits without any fear that one ofthem will make a rush at me. To conclude : I cannot say that I regret having oncein my life paid a visit to the solitudes of Canada. I pro-test only against the pretended pleasure of adventuringthrough hyperborean cold in pursuit of elks; and I defyNimrod himself to prove to me that it is a royal sport,—at least, unless he can succeed in demonstrating at thesame time that the ignoble Kedskins of Loretto are theworthy descendants of the Indian heroes who figure inCoopers brilliant pages, of the XJncas and the Chingach-Kooks.
