They are thesweaty or sudoriparous^ glands^ and the oil^or sebaceous, glands. 13. The Sweat-Glands (Fig. 23) makethe perspiration. They are very slendertubes which reach from the surface, through epidermis and dermis, to thefatty tissue beneath the skin. There thetube coils up into a knot. These glandsare found all over the skin, but notequally distributed. In the palm of thehand there are nearly three thousand toeach square inch: on the middle of theback, where they are fewest, about fourhundred in the same space. There arein all about two and a half milliotis ofsweat-glands, 14. The Pergpiration or Sweat is atransparent colorless liquid, consisting mainly of water. Anything tending to heat the bodycauses perspiration to flow more freely, so its amountis very variable. On an average, it is at least two poundsdaily. It isthen named sensible perspiration. 15. The Chief Use of the Sweat-Glands is to cool thebody when there is danger of its becoming too hot.Whenever a liquid dries up or evaporates, it draws heatfrom whatever it lies on. Your sal
