the murder of several oftheir neighbors, and in their rage committed, without regard to humanity,.a deed which forever afterwards cast a shade of shame upon their lives.For this and kindred outrages on the part of the whites, the Indianscommitted many deeds of cruelty which darken the years of 1771 and1772 in the history of the Northwest. During the year 1782 a number of battles among the Indians andfrontiersmen occurred, and between the Moravian Indians and the Wyan-dots. In these, horrible acts of cruelty were practised on the captives,many of such dark deeds transpiring under the leadership of the notorious THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY. 55 frontier outlaw, Simon Girty, whose name, as well as those of his brothers,was a terror to women and children. These occurred chiefly in the Ohiovalleys.
