C. marks the clavicle. The ribs are numbered so correspond with the numbers at their spinaltermini. It is useful to remember that the sternal end of each rib lies ona lower level than its vertebra. A line drawn horizontally backward fromthe middle of the third costal cartilage at its junction with the sternumwould touch the body, not of the third dorsal but of the sixth dorsal. Thisvaries a little according to the length of the sternum. The eleventh and twelfth ribs can be felt even in corpulent persons,sloping downward. The head of the last rib is on a level with the spineof the dorsal vertebra.
