BishopJocelyn had a long task before him, but his scheme both financiallyand architecturally was to be accomplished in his lifetime. TheChronicle of Melrose reflects the joy and pride of the clergy of Scotlandin its note that in 1181 Jocelyn had gloriously enlarged the church ofSt. Kentigern, and that in 1197 the new cathedral church which he haderected was dedicated, although the structure was then only completedin a first phase. To the same period falls to be assigned the acquisition by thediocesan authorities of a remarkable book, the Pontifical of Glasgow,a beautiful and dignified formulary of church services and ceremonies,such as the dedication of churches, ordinations of priests and professionsof subjection to the mother church of Glasgow, as well as the ritual ofordeal and duel. The volume is now in the BritishMuseum, outliving by six centuries the new Cathedral of 1197, of whichonly a single pillar-shaft in the crypt remains. Another very creditabledocumentary property from that early time still exists also in theBegistrum Episcopatus Glasguensis, or chartulary of the bishopric, contain-ing charters, papal bulls, and important muniments. The editing of thisfine record in 1843 by Cosmo Innes was a model performance, whichdid honour to the Bannatyne and Maitland Clubs which produced it.The Begistrum itself is now at Blairs College, Aberdeen. The writerof this article was one of a little group of three who were privilegednearly thirty years ago to examine this Begistrum Vetus in the hands ofthe venerable Archbishop Eyre in Glasgow, to whom it had been sentfrom Aberdeen for the purpose.
