The 1st Illinois is in good shape: that isthe health of the command is better thanthat of other regiments. It is in camp onthe crest of a hill which is above the mistline of the valleys, and near the camp is aspring of good water. The Chicago boyscame in time to escape the trench-diggingperiod and are in better physical conditionto withstand the fever attack than are thoseregiments that dug trenches under a tropicalsun. But the 1st Illinois will not escapethe fever; that happy exception is too muchto be expected. There is nothing in thisstatement, however, to alarm the mothers,wives, sweethearts and sisters of the Chi-cago soldiers, for the regiment is actuallyin better physical condition than any otherregiment in the corps. WATERING A UNITED STATES MAN-OF-WAR. mitted to come to Santiago, and no one fromSantiago will be permitted to pass the line. Many of the Chicago boys have franklyconfessed they are homesick. It is themonotony of camp life which is bearingthem down. There is little variety in thefood; none whatever in duties. To-day isthe same as yesterday, and to-morrow willcopy to-day. There is the same burningsun from 10 to 4 oclock; the same Novem-ber chill in the early morning hours; thesame suffocating humidity in the afternoon;the same thunderstorms before evening; thesame round of duties—always the same. Thevery sameness is enough to make any mansigh for home and mother, and the Chicagoboys are manly enough to wish from theirhearts they could feel Lake Michigans coolafternoon wind bringing life to them; couldmount bicycles and take a moonlight spin over the boulevards or go out to Lincolnpark, sprawl on the grass of the hill nearthe Grant monument, and drink in great, in-vigorating, lung-fill
