The bodhisattva Maitreya sculpture, Asia
Summary
Sculptures from the early 6th century are characterized
by narrow waists, flat, stylized drapery folds, and angular
faces, hands and feet. Later, in the brief Sui dynasty
period, figures become detached from their background
and are modelled in the round. They also stand upright,
in a somewhat stiff and static pose.
