FLORID CRUCIFORM BROOCHES 269 before us a fine and very characteristic piece of Anglianbronze work of about the middle of VI. It would be tedious to describe any of the more floridexamples that exhibit the further elaboration of the motivestreated with some severity and reserve in the Londesboroughpiece. The specimens on PL xlv speak for themselves, for ineach case there is represented a growth outwards of featureswhich in their origin and simpler forms we have already cometo know. With the ornamental motives employed we are notat the moment concerned, and these will be returned to andexamined in connection with the more ornate forms of thesquare headed fibula, which we shall see developing on similarlines. It may be briefly noted that Nos. 1 and 4, the first atBury St. Edmunds from West Stow Heath, Suffolk, 6 in.long, and the second at Worcester from Upton Snodsbury,Worcestershire, 4J- in. long, are specimens of the later kind ofcruciform brooch found in this country, and Dr. Schetel
