raduated scale to focus by and making theexposure with a multi-speed shutter, the camera being heldin the hand all the while. With a little practice in esti rat-ing distances, focusing can be made very accurate, and if theoperator has a small focusing cloth along he can make useof the swing-back whenever it becomes necessary. Thisswing-back feature is extremely useful in photographingbirds nests, as it makes it possible to get a picture of thenest containing eggs or young birds with the mother birdjust alighting on the edge of the nest or in the act of feedingthe young. The camera would, of course, have to be fastenedto the tree in a favorable position near, a trifle above thenest, and the exposure made with the aid of a long rubbertube and bulb. The possibilities of the swing-back were long ago realizedby the men who make a specialty of natural history photo-graphs ; but there seem to be many amateurs and not a fewprofessionals who often overlook some of its most usefulqualities. 180
