Summary
The Carolingian Empire existed in western and central Europe during the early Middle Ages. It was founded by Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, who became the emperor of the Romans in the west in 800 AD. The Carolingian Empire covered France, Germany, Italy, and parts of the Low Countries, and its capital was located in Aachen, in modern-day Germany. The Carolingian Empire marked the end of the Dark Ages and the beginning of the medieval period.
