No variants can be cited for this irregular and beautiful tune. Henry Reed here called it "Texas," and said he learned this tune from a Mr. Drummond(s) from Texas, but during a later performance (AFS 13705b15) he was certain that the title was "New Castle," after the county seat of nearby Craig County, Virginia.The discussion preceding Henry Reed's later performance ("New Castle," AFS 13705b15) contains interesting comments on "Jawbones," "Shoes and Stockings," and Quince Dillion, as well as a discussion of Henry Reed's role as a participant in these tune-teaching sessions and reflections on how he recalls tunes.
