In many instances there is but a mild degree ofthe characteristic perivascular infiltrate, not sufficient to call agranuloma, and yet the treponema can frequently be recognizedby the Levaditi stain.^^ 60 SYPHILIS Autopsy Findings in Syphilis From a study of the gross anatomy Symmers found in a studyof 4,880 autopsies performed at the Bellevue Hospital evidenceof syphilis in only 314 cases, or 6.5 per cent. Lesions of the skinwere found 106 times, hyperplasia of the lymph nodes 20 times,bone lesions 48 times, orchitis in 67 instances, lesions of the re-spiratory tract 35 times, lesions of nervous system in 112 cases,syphilis of the liver 105 times, aortitis in 175 cases, aneurysmsin 45 cases, gastric ulcer once, and the intestines were involvedsix times.
