NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Nov. 13, 2009) Susan Ford Bales, daughter of President Gerald R. Ford, stands at the helm of the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) during a tour of the ship. Bales is the sponsor of Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). Gerald R. Ford is a new class of aircraft carrier which will begin construction at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
