STS062-16-035 - STS-062 - Columbia's payload bay with USMP-2 and GAS canisters
Summary
The original finding aid described this as:
Description: Photographic documentation of the payload bay of the Space Shuttle Columbia taken during STS-62. The United States Microgravity Payload-2 (USMP-2) and Getaway Special (GAS) canisters are illustrated in the cargo bay. USMP-2 investigated the effects of microgravity on materials and fundamental sciences and did not require the attention of crew members. The experiments contained in the USMP-2 investigated the effects of microgravity on the directional solidification of semiconductor materials, tested dendritic growth theories in the absence of gravity-driven fluid flows, and analyzed the behavior of xenon at its critical point. The GAS canisters are small self-contained payload standard carrier system hardware which stored the limited-duration space environment candidate materials exposure manifested on STS-62.
