CAMEROX-LIVIXGSTONE SEARCH EXPEDITION. 495 for himself something of the system of buying slaves; andgives it as his opinion that the slaves are much better treatedby the traders than while they remained in the hands of theirnative owners. They were mostly captives, surprised when inthe woods a short way from their own villages, and had, ofcourse, to be kejDt in chains to prevent their escaping; other-wise they were not really badly used, being fairly fed and notoverloaded. In the few cases of bad treatment which cameunder his notice, the owners were either slaves themselves, orfreedmen who, on beginning to taste the delights of freedom,seemed anxious to prevent any one lower in the scale from ris-ing to a like state of happiness. This is one mans observa-tion of the slave-trade; Livingstone saw the other side of thequestion when he described the bodies that he had seen, thevictims of their masters rage because their strength had failedthem. As usual, Cameron closely observed the cloth
