The younger collie is called Shep Junior, and,though a very intelligent dog and making goodprogress in the collie language, is given oer muchto frivolity, and has by no means yet secured theconfidence of the sheep. They naturally regardhim as not entirely worthy of their confidence ; foron several occasions he has shown an inclination totake part in the play of the lambs, which puts anend to all sport at once, since he is both awkwardand rough. And upon one occasion he intrudedupon a game of Foliow-my-leader, and snappedsavagely at a lamb who had jumped, out of its turn,from the rocky hillock that skirts the southerlyend of the pasture. 75- OLD SHEP AND THE CENTRAL PARK SHEEP. (August, few vigorous barks from the old dog, young Shepcrouched down and sneaked off the field in thedirection of the fold, trailing his bushy tail in thedust behind him. If you should visit the Park some fine morning,you might see young Shep taking his lessons. Heis never whipped, not even when he does wrong ormakes mistakes, because that breaks the spiritof a collie, as indeed of any other kind ofdog, and a shepherd dog must of all things bebrave. When he does nt carry out an order cor-rectly, or in such a way that the sheep can under-stand him, old Shep is sent with the same orderand Shep Junior is made to keep still and watchhim until it is executed. His first lesson is simplyto guard a hat or a coat or stick thrown upon thegrass by the shepherd, and he is left out with itsometimes until late in the evening to show himthe importance of fidelity, the very first essential ina shepherd dog.
