The monument, erected in 1940, stands as a memorial to the 47 Sailors killed on Nov. 11, 1864 when the Tulip suffered an explosion off St. Inigoes due to a faulty boiler. Naval Air Station Patuxent River held a memorial service Nov. 4 for those killed in the explosion.
