SL2-04-118 (June 1973) --- A color photograph of the San Francisco Bay, California area, taken from the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. (The picture should be held with the clouds and Pacific Ocean on the left.) Note the thickly populated and highly developed area around the bay. Among the cities visible are San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and San Jose. This view extends eastward to show a portion of the San Joaquin Valley. This photograph was taken by one of the six lenses of the Itek-furnished S190-A Multispectral Photographic Facility Experiment in the Multiple Docking Adapter of the space station. ISS012-E-15050 (12 Jan. 2006) --- Sandusky Bay is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 12 crew member on the International Space Station. Sandusky Bay appears with brown muddy water (left) in this view. The bay leads out into southern Lake Erie (top). The small city of Sandusky occupies the northeastern shore of the bay (center of the image). Highway 6 can be seen arcing around the south side of the city. Ferries connect Sandusky to Pelee Island (not visible) in the middle of the lake. In earlier days, Sandusky Bay was known as one of the best protected port sites in the Great Lakes. The most striking aspect of this image is the flow lines of the brown water in and out of the mouth of the bay. Slight movement of lake surface water, driven mainly by wind, causes a small ebb and flow of bay water. Sediment-charged water is derived from agricultural fields along the Sandusky River upstream. Mud plumes in Lake Erie originate from prior pulses of muddy water from the bay. According to scientists studying the station photos, it appears that water was flowing into the bay when this image was taken. Sandusky lies midway between Toledo and Cleveland, both about an hour’s drive away. iss012e15050

SL3-108-1288 (July-Sept. 1973) --- Astronaut Owen K. Garriott, science pilot of the Skylab 3 mission, is stationed at the Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) console in the Multiple Docking Adapter (MDA) of the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. This picture was taken with a handheld 35mm Nikon camera. Astronauts Garriott, Alan L. Bean and Jack R. Lousma remained with the Skylab space station cluster in orbit for 59 days conducting numerous medical, scientific and technological experiments. In orbit the MDA functions as a major experiment control center for solar observations. From this console the astronauts actively control the ATM solar physics telescopes. The space station is sharply contrasted against a black sky background. Note the deployed parasol solar shield which shades the Orbital Workshop where the micrometeoroid shield is missing. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Only the tip of the orange external tank on Space Shuttle Atlantis is visible above the Rotating Service Structure surrounding Atlantis on Launch Pad 39B. The Shuttle is undergoing pre-launch preparations for mission STS-112, scheduled to launch Oct. 2, 2002. ISS009-E-21107 (1 September 2004) --- Astronaut Mike Fincke, aboard the International Space Station at an altitude of about 230 miles, took this photo of Hurricane Frances at about 9 a.m. Sept. 1 as the storm was centered about 800 miles east-southeast of West Palm Beach, Florida. The southern tip of the Florida peninsula and the Bahama islands are visible in the foreground of this image. At the time, Frances was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph and was moving west-northwest toward a possible landfall in Florida. iss009e21107

ISS009-E-21199 (2 September 2004) --- From 230 miles above, this is a nadir view of Hurricane Frances as it churned in the Atlantic Ocean almost 500 miles east-southeast of West Palm Beach, Fla., at about 8 a.m EDT Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004. At the time, Frances was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 mph. Astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke took this photo through the window of the International Space Station. Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka and Fincke, the NASA ISS Science Officer and Flight Engineer, are in the fifth month of a six-month stay on the orbiting research platform. iss009e21199
