The Tucker immedi-ately opened fire with her forward gun, and at fullspeed, ran towards it to attack it with depth charges.The submarine immediately submerged. The de-stroyer then passed over to the spot where the sub-marine had submerged, dropped several depth charges,and described a circle in order to pass over thesame spot again. While the Tucker was thusmanoeuvering, the submarine came to the surfaceagain and the Tucker opened fire, one of theshells apparently hitting it. Again, the submarinesubmerged and the Tucker passed over the spotdropping depth charges. A few moments later thebow of the submarine appeared above the waves, at anangle which indicated that all was not well on board,and then slowly sank.
