Silver King Mining Company, Ore Mill, Park City West, Park City, Summit County, UT

description

Summary

Significance: At the beginning of the twentieth century the Silver King Coalition Mine in Park City, Utah, was both the largest producer of ore and ore-concentrates in the region and the largest dividend-payer in the state. One major problem encountered by Silver King was the transportation of its rich ore and concentrates to the tracks of the Rio Grande Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad in Park City. The solution to this problem was an aerial wire-rope tramway connecting the workings of the mine and mill with an ore-loading station or tipple on the Park City railhead. A good example of contemporary engineering in its day, the Silver King tramway is now dismantled and the ore loading station has been abandoned.

Building/structure dates: 1900- 1901 Initial Construction

Steam Machines, Engines, Locomotives. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotary motion. Watt's ten-horsepower engines enabled a wide range of manufacturing machinery to be powered. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. The steam engine was one of the most important technologies of the Industrial Revolution.

The first, wooden tipple was built in 1910 and used until 1936. The perishable portions of that earlier tipple have disappeared, leaving only the sandstone foundations and some artifacts buried in the tailings pile. This second tipple was built in 1936 when Reliance Mine No. 7 was opened. The new tipple was built more durably of concrete and steel
