Flotation bag manufacturing. Stack of flotation bags made of rubberized fabric inflated for test purposes, preparatory to deflation for insertion in wings of military airplanes. These bags are used to support planes forced down at sea. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Barrage balloon manufacture. Reinforcing tail rigging of a new ballonet type barrage balloon, these workers at the barrage plant are cementing, seaming and rolling reinforcing tape across points in the tail and fins where strain is greatest. General Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio

Stripping tube on mandrel before sending to cure, Goodyear Tire Factory, Akron, O.

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. After they are stamped on the huge toggle press in the metal division of a large rubber factory, these cylindrical domes which make up half of a shatterproof oxygen cylinder, are placed on a large conveyor where they are carried to workmen who will apply the circumferential and longitudinal straps. Cylinders are used for high altitude flying as a source of oxygen. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Last grain of powder is dumped into the mill hopper as another hatch is completely filled. Next batch is in the foreground but will not be started until the present one is completely mixed. Mixing time varies with the characteristic of the batch, both as to the number of ingredients and the speed with which they mix thoroughly into the rubber. General Tires, Akron, Ohio

Self-sealing fuel tanks. The heavy paper building forms for bullet-sealing fuel tanks must be covered with cloth. Women are doing a large portion of the work in turning out these tanks. Goodrich

Barrage balloon manufacture. Making a suspension band. These workers are preparing a reinforced band which will be attached longitudinally around the barrage balloon. This band carries most of the rigging by which the balloon is controlled from the ground. General Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio

The art of mixing and milling requires skillful judgement and deftness of hand. Part of the secret of these tires lies in the careful training and supervision of these skilled workers. Rubber is flopped and turned over and over again, slashed and bunched in some sports, permitted to run thin in others. Although not sticky to the hand, the rubber instantly bonds to itself when loose end are brought together. Firestone (General Tires), Akron, Ohio

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. The first step in the manufacture of high-altitude-flying shatterproof oxygen cylinders in the metal department of a large rubber factory is the forming or stamping of the shell. Stainless steel sheets are blanked or cut into discs(left foreground). Before stamping, these discs are drawn through rolls where a drawing compound is added to both sides to facilitate the forming of the shell. The 750-ton toggle press, shown above, forms a half cylinder in one powerful stroke. Once the half cylinder is formed, it is trimmed and the value-fitting hole is punched into the spherical dome. A cleaning operation later removes the drawing compound. The cylinder halves are now ready for the various welding operations. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Assault boat Production. Building assault boats for U.S. Marine Corps. Woman workers lay out partially-assembled boat preparatory to inflating so that fixtures and other finishing touches may be applied. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

US Army (USA) Specialists (SPC) Brian Goodrich, 7.62mm 240G heavy machine gun operator for 1ST Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, fires a blast at enemy targets during blank fire training held in Thailand, during Exercise COBRA GOLD 2002

Subcontracting aircraft parts. Just to make certain that there are no errors, workers check each step in the preparation of new parts with the blueprints. This worker is gauging part for a new air-craft sub-assembly, and comparing the measurements with the blueprint. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio
