Scene at the Land of Oz, an unusual theme park at Beech Mountain, North Carolina

description

Summary

Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.

At 5,506 feet altitude, Beech Mountain is the highest town east of the Rocky Mountains. The park, which reimagines Frank Baum's story of the Wizard of Oz and the little girl Dorothy in the Land of Oz, was opened in 1970 and for years welcomed visitors daily during the summertime.

The park closed several years later and sat empty until reopening recently. Because the area around the park has grown into a prosperous community of summer and ski homes, owners objected to the crowds, and the park now puts on performances only one day a week in June and in special performances each fall.
