KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- With sunrise just minutes away, the orbiter Columbia swoops down on KSC’s Shuttle Landing Facility, Runway 33. The 33rd KSC landing in Shuttle program history is set to occur on the first opportunity Dec. 7 at 6:49 a.m. EST. Prior landing attempts Dec. 5 and 6 were scrubbed due to weather conditions. The extended time aloft allowed the five- member crew of Mission STS-80 to set a new record for long-duration Shuttle flight. At main gear touchdown, mission duration will be about 17 days, 16 hours, surpassing the 16-day, 21-hour set by the STS-78 crew earlier this year. Guiding Columbia onto the runway is STS-80 Commander Kenneth D. Cockrell; the pilot is Kent V. Rominger. The three mission specialists are Tamara E. Jernigan, Thomas D. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Endeavour is "go" for takeoff from the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida mounted atop NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, or SCA. Takeoff came at 7:22 a.m. EDT. The SCA, a modified 747 jetliner, will fly Endeavour to Los Angeles where it will be placed on public display at the California Science Center. After a successful mission of nearly nine days and 3.6 million miles, the orbiter Discovery glides to Earth on runway 33 at the Shuttle Landing Facility. Main gear touchdown was at 12:04 p.m. EST, landing on orbit 135. The STS-95 mission included research payloads such as the Spartan solar-observing deployable spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform, the International Extreme Ultraviolet Hitchhiker, as well as the SPACEHAB single module with experiments on space flight and the aging process. The crew consisted of Mission Commander Curtis L. Brown Jr.; Pilot Steven W. Lindsey; Mission Specialist Scott E. Parazynski; Mission Specialist Stephen K. Robinson; Payload Specialist John H. Summary

S81-30630 (February 1981) --- This "cutaway" artist's concept exercises some artistic license to reveal systems of the major components of a space shuttle vehicle. With its payload bay doors open here, the shuttle's cryogenic supply station (note cutaway) and the deployable radiator panels (visible) can be seen. In reality, the cargo bay panels would never be open while the orbiter is attached to the solid rocket boosters (SRB) and external fuel tank (ET). The thick-bodied, delta-winged aerospace craft is 37 meters long, has a span of 24 meters (120 feet by 80 feet), and weighs about 75,000 kilograms empty (165,000 lbs). Its payload bay, 18.3 meters long and 4.6 meters in diameter (60 feet by 15 feet) can deliver single or conglomerate payloads of up to 370 kilometers altitude or smaller loads up to 1110 kilometers (230 miles to 690 miles). It can bring payloads of 14,515 kilograms (32,000 lbs) back to Earth and it can carry out a variety of missions lasting seven to 30 days.
