been mostannoying to serious - minded persons in search ofinformation; but to the truly frivolous they havecaused but little practical inconvenience, nor will,until a second and worse Babel inflicts on mankinda confusion of giggles. Our road lay through thick bush, in which a broad ride had been cut, marked by narrow interlacingtracks which the bare feet of its users had worn.Half an hours walk brought us to ArchdeaconCrowthers house, a pleasant dwelling in a well-keptgarden facing the river. We were most amiablyreceived by the Archdeacon and Mrs Crowther, whoshowed us over their beautiful church and well-builtschools, the former capable of seating a thousandpersons, — a number which, I am told, the Arch-deacon often draws within its walls. The mission-buildings are all situated in a clearing in a part ofthe bush which was formerly sacred to the localgod, and from which his votaries, ever anxious tosecure a human sacrifice, were in the habit ofpouncing out on unsuspecting wayfarers.
