ty.VARYING VELOCITY OF PLANETARY MOTION. fall respectively in the seasons mentioned.If the conditions were reversed, so thatour aphelion should fall in midwinterand our perihelion in midsummer, it iseasy to see how greatly the seasonswould be intensified. Instead of being-tempered, as they are at present, by therelations of the earth and sun, the coldof winter would be aggravated by theremoval of that luminary to a greaterdistance in space, and on the other handthe heat conditions of summer would beintensified. Astronomers have estimated with carethe variation in climate produced by thecircumstances here referred to.
