point was Trafalgar, where, in 1805, Lord Nelsongained the victory and lost his life, after twice crossing the ocean tomeet the combined French and Spanish fleets. Finally, the pointof Tarifa, with its white tower blazing against great drifts of yellowsand, again flamed out to us a welcome to Spain. But the channelwas very rough, the cross winds from the Atlantic and the Mediter-ranean rolling up a very disagreeable sea. About three hours of thisroucrh sailing brought us into smoother waters, and we could thenenjoy the coast views rapidly unrolled as we steamed along. To that land of mysteries, whence came the wild invaders ofSpain a thousand years ago, — to sun-scorched Africa, our steamers CADIZ, GIBRALTAR, AND MALAGA. J95 prow was turned, and in a few hours we anchored in the open road-stead of Tangiers. Now, it is far from our purpose to describeTangiers, or our stay there, for reasons already given. Suffice it;Tangiers completed our pictures of the Arabs domiciled in the north

Text Appearing After Image:

TRAFALGAR BAY of Africa, and with our mental vision dwelling upon scenes Orientaland architecture of the time of the Moorish invasion, we turned oursteps toward the desired land of the Spaniards again. Six hourssteaming brought us over to Gibraltar. Glorious rock of Gibraltar,— most magnificent of any part of the coast scenery of either Spain 196 RAMBLES IN SUNNY SPAIN. or northern Africa! The great rock rose before us, as we glidedinto its cool shadows, with long serrated crest, green and gray, withpink and yellow houses nestling at its base, with heavy cloud-masseshanging over Spain beyond, and with a glimpse of the silver SierraNevadas. We had two hours on shore, and those two hours were wellimproved, ransacking the town for views and curios, and peering intoall out-of-the-way corners. No, we did nt have time to climb therock, nor did we see any monkeys, save such as we had broughtwith us of the species that walked erect on two legs, and rejoiced inthe name of man. Before we sail
