ngonly serviceable to a limited extent. Withthe process by decoction, not only are thefibres separated, but with them all theother substances contained in the paper,w^hich renders it difficult to define thestructure of the fibres. For a long timepast the disaggregation of paper has beeneffected by means of a lye of diluted soda, which gives a clear pulp, suitable foruse and not containing any hurtful sub-stances, such as size, filling material orstarch. Consequently astonishment is ex-pressed at the proposal of Koenig to aban-don the process of decoction and to re-turn to the system of scraping, on theground that it produces the desired resultmore rapidly than boiling or looseningthe fibre. Professor Herzberg remarksthat the fibres are, it is true, more quicklyprepared for the object glass, but theyare not pure. The decoction of a smallsample of paper in a test glass, whilebeing shaken, in order to loosen the fibres, does not take much longer than mechani-cal defibration. m ^\^\^m mk°.
