Production. Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes. A new Lockheed P-38 pursuit plane takes form on the production line. The wings and the Allison engines are already in place, and the ship now stands on its own wheels. It still requires many detail jobs before completion, but they are done rapidly under a well-ordered plan, and the plane will soon be rolled out for the fitting of propellers

Production. Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes. Finishing wings for Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes in a large Western aircraft plant. The wings, which were accurately assembled in jigs, are added to the plane bodies as they travel down the final assembly line where engines, landing gear, controls and other equipment will be installed

Production. Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes. Completed wing sections for Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes ready for transfer to the assembly line of a large Western aircraft plant. The wings, which had been accurately assembled in jigs, are added to the plane bodies as they travel down the final assembly line where engines, landing gear, controls and other equipment are also installed

Production. Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes. "Mating" operation in the production of Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes. Previously assembled ship sections are joined together here to form the body of the plane. Feed lines from subassembly sections come to this point from three directions. Only a comparatively small area is required for mating, as the operation is performed rapidly and each plane occupies the space for only a short time

Production. Lockheed P-38 pursuit planes. Another new Lockheed P-38 pursuit ship leaves the main assembly line of a large Western aircraft plant. The station stand has been swept clear and the ship is being lowered away to rest on its own wheels. From here it will be rolled to a test field where propellers will be installed. If trial flights and final inspections prove it satisfactory, the ship will be delivered to the Army

Fort Benning. Parachute troops. Picture of a man doing a good job. He's one of Uncle Sam's student paratroopers at Fort Benning, Georgia, but the way he's getting his chute under control would be credit to an oldtimer. A few minutes ago this man bailed out of a high-speed plane at a point calculated to bring him to the spot where he is landing. Good work, soldier

The X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS-D) completes preparations for launching aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

De Land pool. Babcock airplane plant. Joe Wheeler Miller of De Land, Florida is doing his part in making machinery that will keep American fighting planes in the air. He was named after a southern general, Joe Wheeler, by a father who thought the General was "the fightinest man he knew" and wanted his son to be likewise. He ran a fishing tackle business that went out with priorities. Although he never had an arc welding holder in his hands before entering the De Land vocational school, he and another similarly trained man have acquired speed that has doubled the Babcock production

Car pooling at Lockheed Vega. Arrangements are made by phone, and Don's car is left at home. The few miles left in those tires of his can be used for emergency, or the car may be put completely out of service for the duration. Here, Don leaves the plant ready for the trip home under new car pooling arrangement

Americans all. In the armed forces and on the production line, Americans of every race and creed fight shoulder to shoulder to defeat the forces which threaten to destroy our liberties. Here, Lewis Ward (left) and Walter Shippe work on the bulkhead of the fuselage of a P-47 pursuit ship. Republic Aircraft Corporation
