Production. Aircraft engines. A veteran of the assembly bench, twenty-two-year-old Anne Weinmen, employee of a large Midwest aircraft factory, inspects pistons to be used in airplane engines. With several years experience in Midwestern plants behind her, Miss Weinmen has developed the patience and dexterity this work requires. Melrose Park, Buick plant

Reconditioning used spark plugs for reuse in testing airplane motors, Mighnon Gunn operates this small testing machine with speed and precision although she was new to the job two months ago. Production. Aircraft engines. Hundreds of gears pass through the expert hands of Dorothy Miller and Sylvia Dreiser during their eight-hour working day in a large Midwest aircraft plant. Inspection of these vital cogs in America's war machine is a delicate task and one which requires infinite patience and precision. Melrose Park, Buick plant

Production. Aircraft engines. She used to be a librarian, now she inspects aircraft parts. Prior to Alma Jean Vincent's employment in a large Midwestern aircraft plant, she managed the junior book section of a suburban library. She had also been an assistant buyer of sportswear, but this lack of industrial experience seems to have been no handicap for her present job of visual gauge operator, inspecting airplane motor parts. With only six months of war work behind her, she's more than meeting plant requirements for speed and precision. Melrose Park, Buick plant

Production. Airplane engines. Before this airplane engine arrived at the point of packing for shipment from a Midwest plant, it had to prove itself a good engine. It has been thoroughly tested after original assembly, torn down for minute inspection of all parts, reassembled and put through final tests and inspection. Continental Motors, Michigan

Buick Motor Division is one of the oldest automobile brands in America. It was founded in 1899 in Detroit by David Buick. First cars were made in 1899 and 1900, though full-scale automobile manufacturing was launched only by 1904. For four years the company has been increasing the number of cars produced annually from 37 to 8800 cars in 1908. The Buick’s history is closely connected with other famous brands. For instance, William C. Durant, the founder of General Motors, was a general manager in Buick Motor Division and his friend, Louis Chevrolet, was a racing driver here while he learned how to design cars. This photograph collection was composed of the Library of Congress images and covers the period from 1907 to 1985.
