President Franklin D. Roosevelt Deposits Letter into Highway Post Office Bus (2550290497)

description

Summary

Description: President Roosevelt is shown depositing a letter into the side of a Highway Post Office Bus. By the 1930s, a significant decline in railroad passenger traffic had caused a subsequent decline in the use of railway trains. To fill the void, the postal service transferred some en route distribution from trains to highway buses. This is the first Highway Post Office bus and is the collection of the National Postal Museum.
