After operation. be secured so that the fingers cannot be placed in the mouth. Thiscan be done by tying the hands, or by the use of stiff cuffs over theelbow, which hold the arms straight. Should the child be restless,small doses of paregoric may be given. Every effort should be madeto keep the patient comfortable and from crying. 276 PLASTIC SURGERY As a routine, if the child is old enough, water containing soda bicar-bonate and lactose should be given (per rectum) by the Murphy dropmethod for the first 24 hours. Sterile water may be given by mouthevery two or three hours for the first 12 hours, and then any sterileliquid. Soft diet may be started after a week. A mild catharticshould be given as needed.

There was also a complete unilateral cleft palate in this case. It is advisable to keep the mouth clean with normal salt or boric-acid solution swabs, and an antiseptic spray. The sutured area shouldbe kept as clean as possible. Should the nostril or stitch holes becomeclogged with secretions the free use of sterile boric ointment will soonsoften the mass, which can then be removed with a cotton swab.
